Assess the space
Start with the people and pets using the balcony. Openings near furniture or climbable railings deserve particular attention.
Choose the right materials
Compare the quoted wire grade, diameter and proposed vertical spacing rather than choosing on appearance alone. A clear view should not replace an appropriate barrier.
Plan the installation
Check that the frame runs continuously across the opening and that the wire is evenly tensioned. Ask how the frame attaches to concrete or existing structure.

Keep it in good condition
Keep the frame free of trapped dirt and examine visible fittings periodically, particularly after exterior work on the building.
Questions for your site visit
Ask the installer to show a sample spacing on your balcony and explain the load test and warranty terms in writing.
